Similarly to soccer, a team will consist of a striker, a midfielder, a defender and a goalie – standing for different amounts of buy-in. Positions have their own particular qualifier rounds and if you make it to the live final, a poker pro is going to join you as Team Captain.
The position buy-ins are as follows:
Stage 1
Stage 1 is the Team Selection: it runs on Saturday and Sunday, 20-21st August and this is where you can qualify for your national team. Each position will be filled by the winner of the event of the given buy-in level. To enter the competition, open the PokerStars lobby and go to ‘Events’ and ‘World Cup.’
If you make your first real money deposit using the code “WCP8”, you get a $11 Stage 1 (midfielder) ticket!
Stage 2
In the Knockout Round, the four players who won the qualifiers play against the rest of the national teams of their respective region. Positions once again compete independently, that is, goalies play goalies and defenders play defenders, etc.
You can check out your group at the WCP VIII Country Qualifiers page here. Stage 2 runs 27-28th August. The team that performs the best in their group, taking all four positions into consideration, qualifies for the Live Final.
Stage 3
In the Live Final, players of the 7 national teams play in the PCA in January, 2012 in The Bahamas for the WCP Champion title.
Prizes of the World Cup of Poker
In the Live Final, a total of 9 teams will compete (the way the two additional ones qualify is as yet undisclosed). They win prize packages that include travel costs and accommodation at Atlantis in The Bahamas and they can play live in the 2012 PCA. The prize pool of the WCP is $290,000 and it is distributed as follows:
The prizes listed above will be won by the teams, meaning it will be distributed among the players evenly. Thus, members of the winning team will receive $25,000 each.
