In March, WPT Global rolled out a major software update for its desktop client, featuring a brand-new dark mode and a completely redesigned lobby. While the modernized interface looks cleaner and more streamlined, not all players welcomed the changes, according to a report by Poker Industry PRO.
What’s New in the Cash Game Lobby
One of the most significant changes is the removal of cash game filters. Games are now grouped by stake and game type, with each row showing total active players in that category.
WPT Global’s fast-fold format, Pace, is now listed alongside other cash games rather than in a separate tab.
No-Limit Hold’em, Pot-Limit Omaha, and Short Deck each remain accessible via dedicated tabs, as do MTTs and Global Spins games.
On the right-hand side, players can view detailed stats, including player counts, table availability, blinds, and short descriptions of special features like Bomb Pot, Big Ante, and Pace.
Tournament Lobby Updates
The tournament lobby also received a visual upgrade. The former light background has been replaced with dark mode as the default, with various tournament types color-coded—e.g., red for PKOs, blue for turbos.
Key tournament info such as buy-in, start time, late registration, and format is now more clearly displayed. An improved icon system marks each type: PKOs have a red target, 6-max tables show a “6,” and so on.
Detailed tournament stats—including structure, starting stack, total entries, and prize pool—are available in a single pane on the right, eliminating the need to open separate lobbies.
Mixed Reactions from Players
While many welcomed the dark mode and sleeker look, others criticized the changes—especially the removal of filters. WPT Global has since confirmed that filters will return soon.
Some players find the tournament lobby too crowded, and many have requested an option to switch between dark and light mode. Others pointed out the absence of remaining player counts in tournaments or mentioned that the new icons clutter the interface.
On the plus side, several users noted improved software stability, with tables loading faster and fewer crashes since the update.
Strategic Shift and Restructuring
The update reflects a broader strategic pivot: WPT Global is once again focusing on the Asian market. The past year saw multiple rounds of layoffs, a new CEO, and the departure of President Alex Scott.
Despite internal changes, WPT Global remains the world’s second-largest online poker network, with around 2,700 concurrent cash game seats—an increase likely tied to the new lobby design, which now displays all available tables.
