Australia has joined the group of countries aiming for the legalization of online gambling. According to the Daily Telegraph, online gambling will be legal in Australia within one year.
Although they still have plenty of time left, the Australian government wished to inform the contestants of their future plans in time, so that the companies have enough time to prepare for the changes. Online poker and sportsbetting could be legalized in 6 to 12 months.
Gambling has been illegal in Australia since the introduction of the 2001 gambling law, and citizens not abiding by these rules have to face serious punishments (not one fine has been issued since the introduction of the law, however...).
As online sports betting is considerably larger and more important for the Australian government than poker, the new legislation will instantly make betting possible, while poker will operate in a five-year trial period, says the Daily Telegraph. As of yet, we do not have information considering the meaning of this "trial period".
