Last May, a landmark decision was made by the United States Supreme Court. The judges decided that individual states would make laws on sports gambling rather than the U.S. government as a whole. Since the decision was made, all 50 states have scrambled to pass or deny laws allowing sports gambling.
The ones which now allow sports betting are seeing the industry thrive and tax money is being made by the states. More are expected to follow suit in the months to come. Genting has one of the best bet bonuses and customers can enjoy great odds on all their favourite sports. One early adopter is having success others dream they can replicate.
New Jersey leading the way in sports betting
New Jersey has long been a state interested in gamblers. Atlantic City was once a destination for east coast high rollers. It was the Las Vegas of the eastern seaboard and it grew rapidly in the 1980s behind the financial might of current U.S. President Donald Trump.
Now, New Jersey is leading the way in sports betting. America’s love of the NFL and NCAA football has helped the state’s sportsbooks boom. In August, $96 million were bet on sports in New Jersey. That figure nearly doubled in September as the American football seasons moved into full bloom. By the time the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl roll around in early 2019, September’s $184m bet on sports in New Jersey could be smashed.
The state allowed sports betting to begin in June of this year. Over $330m has been wagered on sports since then. It is believed around $309m has been kept after paying out winnings. President Trump’s former playground of Atlantic City has benefited greatly from sports betting. The town had been in decline for over a decade as its casinos had lost their lustre due to gamblers playing online. In addition, Las Vegas had taken many of the travellers away from Atlantic City due to the family friendly activities on offer. Atlantic City’s nine casinos reported revenue of $272.2m following sports betting being allowed.
Why is New Jersey excelling in sports gambling?
The U.S. is sports mad. Americans love their sports and enjoy four of the top-tier leagues in sports. The NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, and NHL attract the best of the best in their respective sports. Betting on games makes it more attractive to fans than just watching. Add in the ability to make a living or partial living when betting on sports, and millions of Americans are ready to make a bet.
Over the last 30 years, many states have okayed casinos to be built in specific regions. It was always believed sports betting would soon follow. However, major American sports and the NCAA – who doesn’t pay university students to play – objected to legalised sports betting. The NCAA is afraid student-athletes could be swayed to throw a game if paid by gamblers. Due to the NCAA making millions from athletes playing for free, their fears are somewhat warranted. The Supreme Court’s decision upset the NCAA, but it doesn’t appear sports fans feel the same way.
New Jersey’s location helps make it a hotbed for sports betting. Residents from New York City, Philadelphia, and other major northeast locations can easily drive to the Garden State and wager on sports. Other states may not see similar success, but right now, New Jersey’s sports betting revenue rivals Nevada.
