888Poker Boasts One of Its Biggest XL Winter Series In Last Few Years
It’s the start of 2024, and 888poker is back with its annual XL Winter Series. Further, it seems that 2024 will be the year to bring even more excitement to this flagship tournament than in previous years.
Overview of the Series
This XL Winter series boasts over $2 million in guarantees spread over 34 official events. Counting the side events pushes it over 68 tournaments and an overall guarantee of $2.4 million. This series started on January 14th and runs until January 31st.
The Format
This series boasts a Mystery Bounty and Progressive Knockout format. However, the buy-in and average guarantee per event changed. This year, the brand made the executive decision to increase the buy-ins, now ranging between $11 and $888.
Thanks to this, the average buy-in is around $100, with the Main Event’s buy-in being $888 instead of $525, as with previous years. However, this price increase comes with its perks. The average guarantee for each tournament has gone significantly up, averaging at around $35.5k instead of the $19.3k in the 2023 edition.
Another perk is the Main Event’s increase in guarantee. Where the previous Main Events has always offered $500k in previous instalments, this is the first XL Winter Main Event to provide a $1 million prize pool.
Main Event and More
The $1 million Main Event is a Mystery Bounty multi-flight event, with Day 1s running until January 29th. For players who don’t fancy the $888 buy-in, there’s a Mini Main Event with a $25 buy-in and a $100k prize pool.
Players were looking forward to the $109 buy-in Opening Event on January 15th, featuring a $120k guarantee, but for any who miss it, there’s also the $200k Mystery Bounty multi-flight event. It starts on January 16th and has a $162 buy-in.
High rollers will be happy to hear of the $50k guarantee Mystery Bounty High Roller tournament with a $525 buy-in. Players can tune into the brand’s Twitch live streams on January 15th, 23rd, and 30th to show series highlights. There are also freerolls running, which can award players tickets, or you can receive complimentary tickets on its various social media channels.
Comparison with Previous Years
The first tournament in 2020 was called the XL Blizzard, with a $1.4 million overall guarantee. While 888poker skipped 2021, it came back in 2022 with a $1.5 million prize pool. The 2023 series had the highest overall guarantee at $2.5 million, but it had a low average guarantee, and all events before 2024 had a $500k main event.
