The inaugural Caesars Cup was held in 2009 during the WSOPE and it was won by the European team, led by Annette Obrestad, 4 to 1. The winning team starred Patrik Antonius, Peter Eastgate, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Gus Hansen, John Harvey, Dario Minieri and Ilari ‘Ziigmund’ Sahamies. Although the unofficial event was not organised in 2010, this year it makes its return as part of the WSOPE.
Phil Hellmuth has the honour of being Captain of Team US/Canada and the 11 times WSOP champion voted for Johnny Chan, Daniel Negreanu, Huck Seed and Doyle Brunson as his team. However, Brunson and later Seed called off the event.
“Team USA/Canada: @TexDolly couldn't make it to Cannes, big loss, but time to bring in a Young Gun! @jasonmercier @benbalamb or @tom_dwan?” Hellmuth tweeted. A bit later, he came up with a decision: “As Captain of Team USA/Canada I select @JasonMercier as our 5th player. He has earned it w his stellar tournament record the last few yrs.”
Soon afterwards, it turned out Seed was not going to attend the WSOPE either. The ‘Poker Brat’ substituted him with Ben Lamb:
“As Captain of Team USA/Canada I'm picking @BenbaLamb for 3 reasons: tourney record, @RealKidPoker + @JasonMercier voted for him and Ben Lamb is the only player ahead of me in "Player of the Year" race! Although I plan on passing him in the next few days, bring it!!!”
Eventually, the US/Canadian team will feature Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier and Ben Lamb against Europe’s Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier (C), Jake Cody, Gus Hansen, Dario Minieri and Maxim Lykov.
