WSOP Event #21: Michael Gathy Wins $5,000 LHE

By the third day of Event #20, the $5,000 Limit Hold'em tournament at the WSOP, 17 players remained, lead by Matthew Woodward. In the end, Benjamin Scholl emerged victorious cashing $206,760.

The 9-handed final table formed with the elimination of the well-known pro, 2012 Aussie Millions A$ 100,000 High Roller champion Dan Smith. Smith opened on the button to 53,000, but he was 3bet by Noah Vaillancourt to 128,000. Smith went all-in, Vaillancourt called. The shortstack Josh Field was the first to go, he shipped his chips a few hands into the final table, His K-J was dominated by Jamie Armstrong's pocket nines on the dry board.

Field was followed by Jason Manggunio, Jean-Louis Santoni, Eric Davis, and Eric Baldwin. Baldwin was beaten by Armstrong, who opened from the SB, Vaillancourt 3bet to 175,000, and the BB Baldwin went all-in with 710,000. Vaillancourt called after long hesitation.

Vaillancourt took the pot with a three of a kind.

John Esposito finished 4th, and the heads-up formulated with the elimination of Vaillancourt, who was beaten by Armstrong.

The final battle lasted for an hour, the Belgian player Michael Gathy managed to gain the chiplead, and by the 31st blind level, he was able to finish his opponenet. Armstrong raised to 250,000, Gathy reraised to 600,000, Armstrong went all-in, Gathy called.

Michael Gathy is not new to final tables, he won the Belgian Poker Series €1,700 Main Event in 2011 for €175,000.
