WSOP 2013 Event #46 $3,000 Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Day 1 saw 435 entrants, who amassed $1,187,550 in prize money. Only 139 of them survived the day but the 45 ITM finishes were still a long way down the road. US pro Matt Woodward grabbed the chiplead but the likes of Gavin Smith, Stephen Chidwick, Eric Baldwin, Joe Hachem, Mike Matusow and Jeff Madsen trailed him for the top.

The money bubble burst with the elimination of Ali Eslami on Day 2 and a number of poker dignitaries busted out before concluding the day, including David ‘ODB’ Baker (42nd), Matusow (39th), Smith (32nd), Amnon Filippi (24th), Hachem (20th) and Eddie Blumenthal (19th). Eventually, 17 players remained with Alexey Makarov in the chiplead and Vladimir Shchmelev, John Cernuto and Chidwick in the field, among others.

Play began on Level 19 (4,000/8,000) and the first out was Ari Engel. After the eliminations, including Chidwick in 14th place, the finale began on Level 23 (10,000/20,000).

The Final Table seat draw was as follows (stacks are estimates):

Seat 1: Andrey Zaichenko – 275,000
Seat 2: Brian Hacker – 410,000
Seat 3: Vladimir Shchmelev – 775,000
Seat 4: Mel Judah – 315,000
Seat 5: Tyler Nelson – 275,000
Seat 6: John Cernuto – 202,000
Seat 7: Ashly Butler – 620,000
Seat 8: Allyn Jaffrey Shulman – 305,000
Seat 10: Alexey Makarov – 165,000

Shortstack (and previous chipleader) Makarov was out first, moving all-in on the 5-K-9 flop. Brian Hacker called and showed 5-5-A-2 against Makarov’s A-2-7-2. The K on the turn gave an unbeatable full house to Hacker and Makarov was out in 9th place, regardless of the 4 on the river.

The only lady at the Final Table, Allyn Jaffrey Shulman busted out next, followed by Andrey Zaichenko, Tyler Nelson, Cernuto and Hacker. When Ashly Butler bet pot on the 5-6-9 flop on Level 26 (20,000/40,000), Shchmelev raised to all-in and Butler called. Shchmelev showed a straight with A-2-7-8 and the 4 and T on the last streets did not keep Butler from being eliminated in 3rd.

Vladimir Shchmelev – 2,800,000
Mel Judah – 1,115,000

In just a couple of hands, the tournament was over: Mel Judah raised to 125,000 from the Button on Level 27 (25,000/50,000), Shchmelev called and the flop came {#}5 {#}2 {#}5 . Shchmelev check-raised to 350,000 and Judah called again. On the {#}9 turn, Shchmelev called Judah’s 3-bet all-in and they tabled their cards.

Shchmelev: {#}A {#}7 {#}2 {#}2
Judah: {#}A {#}5 {#}6 {#}K

River: {#}Q

The flopped full house gave the WSOP title to Vladimir Shchmelev, along with the $279,194 first prize.
