The in the money bubble burst around midway into Day 2. Of the biggest names, Turner finished 32nd, Jeff Lisandro 30th, Little 29th, Hal Lubarsky 23rd, Anderson 21st and John Monette 15th. The 12 remaining players kept being led by Le.
Before the Final Table was formed, Baker busted out in 10th place, Mike Watson in 8th and, to the surprise of many, Le in 7th, bubbling the finale.
The Final Table seat draw was as follows:
Seat 1: Maria Ho – 200,000
Seat 2: Mike Schiffman – 440,000
Seat 3: Jeff Thompson – 620,000
Seat 4: Danny Warchol – 450,000
Seat 5: Marco Johnson – 410,000
Seat 7: Juha Helppi – 385,000
Play resumed on Level 22 (6,000/12,000) and shortstack Maria Ho was railed soon, getting all-in on the A 3 7 flop. Both Johnson and Juha Helppi were in play but they checked the 5 turn as well as the 6 river. Helppi’s J-7 for a pair was enough to take the pot, Johnson’s queen high and Ho’s king high falling behind.
Next came Mike Schiffman in 5th and Danny Warchol in 4th place, before the heads-up could be set on Level 26 (15,000/30,000): after losing a lot of chips to Jeff Thompson in a mucked hand, Helppi called all-in on Thompson’s 3-bet preflop. Johnson also called but he folded on Thompson’s bet on the K 5 2 flop.
Thompson: J J
Helppi: 4 4
Turn: Q
River: 7
Helppi was out in 3rd and Thompson remained to face Johnson heads-up from behind.
Marco Johnson – 1,600,000
Jeff Thompson – 900,000
Johnson did not leave much chance for his opponent: after further increasing his lead to 2,200,000 against 300,000 in chips, they moved all-in on the 5 8 3 7 board.
Thompson: A 6
Johnson: A 5
River: 7
The pair of fives held out and Johnson emerged victorious.
With three runner-up finishes in previous WSOP events, Marco Johnson finally earned the coveted golden bracelet, together with a first prize of $206,796.
The end results are as follows:
1st: Marco Johnson – $206,796
2nd: Jeff Thompson – $127,801
3rd: Juha Helppi – $82,956
4th: Danny Warchol – $55,457
5th: Mike Schiffman – $38,095
6th: Maria Ho – $26,858
