The first to lose his stack was WSOP 2010 Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel: in the fourth hand of the Final Table (PLO, 15,000/30,000), he opened from UTG to 65,000 and both George Danzer and Matthew Ashton made the call. The fop came 6 J T , Ashton and Duhamel checked, Danzer bet 130,000, Ashton folded and Duhamel raised the pot. Danzer 3-bet and Duhamel pushed in the rest of his chips.
Danzer: J 6 2 5
Duhamel: K K Q 2
Turn: Q
River: 4
Despite the queens on the turn, the river failed to help Duhamel and his hand remained under Danzer’s two pairs, eliminating the Canadian in 8th place.
Mike Wattel, Minh Ly and Danzer were railed on the next level, the latter busting out in another PLO hand (20,000/40,000): after a raising battle on the 8 8 3 flop, Danzer eventually shoved his 2,250,000 in chips and Don Nguyen called.
Danzer: A K 9 8
Nguyen: K J T 8
Turn: 4
River: J
Both players having triple eights and Danzer a better kicker, he was ahead all the way to the cooler jack on the river, which railed him in 5th.
After a long four-handed game, WSOP and WPT title holder David Benyamine moved all-in on the sixth street in a Stud hand on Level 24 (120,000/240,000) and Nguyen called.
Nguyen: 7 2 / 2 Q 7 2 / J
Benyamine: x x / J 4 5 x / x
Benyamine mucked his hand on Nyguyen’s full house and he was out in 4th place.
The heads-up was set another two levels later, when two times WSOP champion John Hennigan shoved his chips and Ashton called on the 8 6 J flop in a PLO hand (50,000/100,000).
Hennigan: Q Q 7 4
Ashton: A 8 6 3
Turn: T
River: A
Ashton’s top two pairs meant the end of the game for Hennigan, who left the arena in 3rd place. Ashton, meanwhile, had a vast edge on Nguyen for the heads-up, with about a 7:1 chipcount ratio.
Matthew Ashton – 17,300,000
Don Nguyen – 2,500,000
In less than ten hands, the Poker Players’ Championship was over. In a Limit Hold’em hand (200,000/400,000), Ashton raised from the Button and Nguyen called to check-raise on the T 7 3 flop. Ashton called and the turn came 9 . Nguyen bet, Ashton called and the saw the river come Q . Nguyen bet again, Ashton raised and Nguyen called all-in.
Nguyen: T 6
Ashton: K T
With a better kicker, Ashton took down the tournament for $1,774,089 in prize money.
On his fourth Final Table in this year’s WSOP, Matthew Ashton managed to win his first ever golden bracelet.
