CardRunners have sent the following email out to its registered users informing them about an unfortunate event that took place last night:
"Last night we identified and stopped an illegal intrusion of the CardRunners servers.
While no customer credit card or financial information was compromised, we have confirmed that the following customer information related to your account may have been compromised:
Email Address
Encrypted Password
IP Address
Out of an abundance of caution, we have forced your password to be reset. If you use your CardRunners username or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we recommend that you change them as well."
Many players are worried about the theft of their passwords, and the possible compromise of their identity. As a response, Jeff Miller, Corporate Support Manager for CardRunners LLC ensured these players on a popular poker forum that their stolen passwords are encrytped, and nearly impossible to crack:
"I just spoke to one of our tech guys (not the head of tech, but one of his staff). He was not at liberty to share the exact encryption method we use. But he did say, and I quote, 'we have encrypted the passwords in a way that are nearly impossible to decrypt.'
I am afraid that I cannot comment more than that because I just don't have the level of expertise necessary
We will talk with the team tomorrow about getting you all a better idea what is going on."
Rakerace.com advises all players, who have accounts with CardRunners that they take the necessary precautions to minimize the amount of incoming spam related to this event.
