“We’re gonna shock the world” was his motto and it took 193 hands played in about 7.5 hours for Pilgrim to live up to his words. From level 34 (75,000/150,000/25,000) they advanced to level 41 (300,000/600,000/75,000) and play became increasingly heated as they progressed. The final table seating was as follows:
During the HU, Pilgrim managed to keep
Kia Mohajeri behind almost all along; only he was keen on reminding his opponent of it, too. According to
Lee Childs, who spectated the battle,
“the crowd is increasingly getting on Kia's side as Dwight continues to be rude and insult him.” Hand #193 finally came with the showdown of the two: Mohajeri went all-in on a board of
K
T
9
7 which Pilgrim immediately called. Mohajeri held
K
9 for two pairs but Pilgrim showed
Q
J and, as the river was
5 , he won his first
WPT title with a straight. He broke into tears with joy over this well deserved success, something of which there is surely more to come – only he should drop the Hellmuth/Tony G style.
