Nguyen: 845,000
Play resumed on Level 28 (50,000/100,000) and Nguyen started off better, coming back gradually. By Level 29 (60,000/120,000) the players stood as follows:
Cassidy: 2,375,000
Nguyen: 1,470,000
However, Cassidy turned it back, getting a major edge once again. He limped from the button, Nguyen called and the flop came 4 Q T . Nguyen check-raised, Cassidy called and down fell the 2 on the turn. Nguyen bet 120,000, Cassidy raised, Nguyen called and then check-called Cassidy’s 120,000 bet on the K river. Cassidy showed Q T A 7 for top two pairs against Nguyen’s Q-4 two pairs.
Scotty Nguyen
Cassidy: 3,065,000
Nguyen: 780,000
Five times WSOP champion Nguyen was not about letting it go just yet, though; even as he dropped down to as little as 220,000, he climbed back again to start Level 30 (80,000/160,000) with 1,710,000 in chips against Cassidy’s 2,135,000.
Following another major pot that went to Cassidy, however, Nguyen was unable to reduce his opponent’s edge anymore and entered the final hand with only 200,000 in chips. Cassidy raised and Nguyen re-raised all-in preflop:
Cassidy: A K 5 2
Nguyen: J 8 5 2
Board: A Q 8 J T
Cassidy won with a straight for his first WSOP bracelet ever.
Joe Cassidy
