After three days of play, only the top 3 players remained to conclude WSOP 2013 Event #53 $1,500 No Limit Hold’em. The tournament had a prize pool of $3,801,600, amassed by 2,816 entrants, and it featured a large number of renowned professionals of the industry. Only 25 players returned on Day 3 but they could not finish the event, the following three players having to return to decide the fate of the golden bracelet:

David Vamplew – 5,345,000
Brett Shaffer – 5,285,000
Arttu Raekorpi – 2,055,000

Play started on Level 22 (20,000/80,000/160,000) and it took just four hands to get heads-up: Arttu Raekorpi pushed in his remaining 1,635,000 in chips from the Button and Brett Shaffer called from the SB.

The neutral board did not help Raekorpi and the Finn was out in 3rd place.

Brett Shaffer – 6,375,000
David Vamplew – 6,295,000

From about the same stack sizes, Day 3 chipleader David Vamplew managed to take a slight lead but Shaffer came back quickly and increased his edge to about 2:1 in just around ten hands. Finally, he re-raised all-in with over 8,300,000 in chips on Vamplew’s 400,000 raise on Level 23 (30,000/100,000/200,000) and the latter called with his remaining stack of 3,935,000.

Despite having the nuts preflop, Vamplew’s hand was cracked by Shaffer’s flopped top two pairs and the queens failed to improve on the board.
