The first major live tournament of the year was the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA). Gallen ‘GasparLeMarc’ Hall took down the event for $2,300,000; the runner-up was Chris ‘Gettin Daize’ Oliver for $1,800,000. In third place finished Anton Ionel ($1,350,000), the fourth was Sam Stein ($1,000,000) and the fifth was Mike Sowers ($700,000) in the strong field.

On Day 1A of the PCA Main Event, PokerStars has officially revealed the identity of their new pro member, ‘Isildur1.’ There has been little surprise, though; what everybody had since long suspected turned out to be true: the screen name belongs to the young Swedish player, Viktor Blom.

Federated Sports & Gaming and the Palms Casino Resort have announced that they were going to start a new poker league for the world’s top 200 players. Five events, including a grand final was included in the first season of the Epic Poker League, the chairman of which becaming Jeffrey Pollack, and the commissioner being ex-UB pro Annie Duke.

On 30 January, one of the most interesting sessions of the PokerStars SuperStar Showdown promotions took place. Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom played heads-up against 2010 high stakes king Daniel ‘jungleman12’ Cates. Blom eventually won the 2,500 hands clash with +$51,196.

Dane pro Gus Hansen was the biggest high stakes winner of January, finishing the month with $879,992 in profit at Full Tilt Poker. The biggest fish of the month was ‘NEKOTYAN’ with -$837,111.
