Sylvia started playing during his college years but, in the beginning, he was not very successful at it. Depositing several times in online rooms, he continued to lose his bankrolls, up until a Sunday Million in 2008: for finishing 3rd, he won $77,860. This was a sufficient funding for starting to learn the game on higher stakes and before long, Sylvia was a professional player, now a sponsored pro of 888poker. He says he plays 40 to 60 hours a week.
As far as live tournaments are concerned, his greatest success prior to the WSOP Main Event this year was a runner-up finish in the 2008 Mega Stack Series $200 NLHE event for $15,078. The 2012 Final Table, however, is a certain turning point in his career: with 43,875,000 in chips, he leads the October Nine to the finale on the 28th. Bookmakers unambiguously consider him the favourite of winning the Main Event.
“Every day I felt like I was going to make the final table. I was playing well and running well, and I felt a bit invincible,” Sylvia told Pokerfuse.com.
One of his key hands was played on Day 7, taking an enormous pot with full house against Greg Merson’s flush.
“Then the river was a 3, bringing my full house. I ran to my rail, and we all went nuts. It was a sign, to me, that this was my tournament to win. A few hours later, we made it to the final table, and I had a mountain of chips in front of me,” he remembered the hand.
The 26 years old player got tremendous support on his way into the Final Table and expects that to continue in the finale as well.
“Where I live there is a pretty large, tightly knit community, and I expect a lot of friends will come out. The support of friends and family is so, so important. They make me want to be a better person, player, etc.”
In case of winning, Sylvia feels committed to do everything possible to make people realise, poker is a game of skill and unlike other games of gambling.
