While the Player of the Year title used to be voted for, this year the Global Poker Index (GPI), introduced by the Epic Poker League, determined who receives the award. As of 31 December, 2012, the first European player on the list was Marvin Rettenmaier, qualifying him for the title.

In seven more categories, a committee chooses from the nominees. The committee consists of Nic Szeremeta, Stephan Gollubits, Barry Carter, Alexandre Dreyfus, Jesse May, Jerome Schmidt, Joe Beevers and Michael Michelin.
