We’ve previously discussed the possibility of Entain selling PartyPoker. If that had happened, it would have been because the poker room was deemed a non-core asset. However, the conclusion of the company’s strategic review has taken a different turn, and it seems PartyPoker is safe for now.
Results of the Strategic Review
Entain’s strategic review concluded recently. Instead of PartyPoker, it deemed its brand Crystalbet as a non-core asset. You’ll recall that Crystalbet was one of the possible non-core assets we mentioned.
However, the company didn’t mention any other assets it will sell besides this brand. The capital allocation committee (CapCo) conducted the strategic review. They stated that they’d consider “Strategic alternatives” for Crystalbet. Further, they’ve already received interest from “potential acquirers” if they decide to sell it.
Whatever the case, we’re sure many players are happy that PartyPoker won’t be changing hands just yet. While the brand’s sale isn’t entirely off the table, it also seems unlikely that Entain would sell it as matters stand now.
Entain’s Entry into the USA
Entain is now focusing its efforts on conquering the USA. Its executives have requested Nevada authorities to license its PartyPoker software several times. By using its PartyPoker software with its BetMGM brand, it can offer BetMGM Poker. This site will be only the state’s second regulated online poker operator after WSOP NV.
The good news is that its efforts have paid off. The Nevada Gaming Commission has “unanimously approved the applications of Entain.” As such, BetMGM Poker should launch in about a year.
BetMGM Poker’s Challenges
While BetMGM will likely launch in about a year or so, judging by comments from Entain and MGM executives, it’s not out of the woods yet. Should a new CapCo review decide that PartyPoker isn’t a core asset, the company might lose rights to PartyPoker’s poker software.
If a rival company obtains the poker room, it could refuse to lease the software, which will be a significant blow to the BetMGM Poker effort. However, PartyPoker wasn’t one of the identified non-core assets in this review.
Further, it plays a vital role in BetMGM’s poker expansion to the US, so we believe it unlikely that Entain will sell it soon. We also know that this expansion isn’t the only thing the company has in the works. According to Barry Gibson, Entain’s board chairman, they still have work to “improve our operational performance.”
Enjoy PartyPoker’s Central Promotions
