Speculations have been circling around since the FBI’s actions on April 15 about the possible effects Black Friday might have on WSOP 2011. Most contributors to the discussions believe that the number of participants will be considerably less than last year’s figures, especially in the case of high stakes events, including the $10,000 Main Event.
Since the three greatest of the US-friendly online rooms and networks, PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and the Cereus Network were forced to freeze US players’ accounts and only PokerStars has yet been able to facilitate cash outs, all those players having their money on their online accounts may have a hard time registering for the WSOP. WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart, however, is confident that this will not have an effect on the number of participants.
“I believe this is the year when everyone sees evidence of just how big poker has become around the world. I believe this is the year where people see and recognize what a juggernaut the modern World Series of Poker has become,” Stewart stated, adding that the WSOP is the single most important event of the year for every poker player and whoever has the bankroll for it will travel to Las Vegas this summer as well.
WSOP Registration 2010 - Will there be so many participants in 2011, too?
There were a total of 72,966 players registering for the 2010 WSOP events which is a record number in the 41-year history of the tournament. The Main Event alone saw 6,494 entrants; a scale tournament management tries to at least near this year.
“We’re always planning for more regardless of any outside factors. If a tournament had 3,000 players last year, we expect the tournament to have 3,000 players this year,” Tournament Director Jack Effel commented. He, therefore, does not expect the number of participants of the Main Event to be under 5,000 this year, either. Still, even tournament officials admit there might be fewer players registering to the $50,000 Players Championship.
WSOP 2011 kicks off on May 31, featuring a total of 58 events in which players can race for the awards and the most coveted bracelets of the poker world.
