It’s that time of the year, with PokerStars’ prestigious World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) next on the schedule. It’s PokerStars’ flagship series and one of the most iconic online events.
This year, many features remain the same, with only a few differences to the 2023 edition. Learn what to expect from the 2024 WCOOP series, which runs from September 8th to October 2nd.
The Success of WCOOP
WCOOP started in 2002 and has more than two decades of experience. Many regard it as the online equivalent of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), as it attracts the best online poker players globally. This series traditionally offers more significant guarantees than SCOOP, which increases its prestige.
The series has amassed some impressive milestones since 2002. Some of its most significant statistics are:
- Total tournaments - 2,445
- Number of Instalments - 22
- Number of Participants - 8,835,603
- Total Guarantees - $1,299,316,484
- Avg Guarantee per Tournament - $531,418
- First Place Prizes Total - $200,132,701
The Traditional WCOOP Structure
This year will follow much of the same structure as last year. The series has an $80 million guarantee and runs for 25 days. There are three buy-in levels: low, mid, and high, with buy-ins ranging from $5.50 to $25,000.
The Main Tournament will once again have a $109 to $10,300 buy-in. There are about a dozen Championship events in different disciplines. These events include Pot-Limit Omaha, No-Limit Hold ’em, Heads-Up, and almost 150 Progressive KO’s as the fan favourite.
However, players will also be able to participate in championship events like Triple Draw, PLO8, 8-Game, 2-7 Single, and Razz. All tournament winners will also receive iconic trophies, which help enhance the reputation of this legendary series.
Changes to the 2024 Instalment
While most of the structure remains the same, this year’s instalment has more tournaments. It pushes last year’s schedule of 340 events up to 379 events this year. This change has a marked impact on the series.
It’s the broadest schedule in the series’ history, dropping the average guarantee by 10% from $235k to $211k. You can also see its impact on the Main Event guarantees, as the mid-event dropped from $4 million to $3.5 million.
Meanwhile, the high event dropped from $6 million to $5 million. Some of the newly available tournaments are 18 new Mystery Bounty tournaments, giveaways in women’s events, and exciting new promotions.
Player Promotions to Claim
In an effort to make this series more accessible to players of all bankrolls, PokerStars released several fresh promotions. Players can qualify using the Power Path system, traditional satellites, Fast-Track, and WCOOP’s Spin & Go games.
There will be four leaderboards for Low, Medium, High, and Overall achievements. The WCOOP Champions Freeroll is also back. Besides these events, PokerStars will offer a new league, similar to what they did with SCOOP 2024. PokerStars ambassadors will lead six teams in this league.
Four solely women’s events will provide packages, including entry into the live Women’s Winter Festival. After the recent WCOOP Bootcamp, these promotions are the best way to join the 2024 WCOOP Series.
