GGPoker has maintained its reign as the poker king since it stepped up to the throne in 2021. However, it’s all well and good to say GGPoker holds court at the top, but what does it actually mean?
GGPoker’s Rise to Fame
In 2021, GGPoker overtook PokerStars in terms of cash game traffic with less than a decade of experience behind it. Before that, PokerStars had reigned for 15 years as the undisputed king. Since then, GGPoker has remained leagues above the rest of the poker rooms despite some challenges, such as the “superuser” scandal at the end of 2023.
2024: A Year to Remember
As an epic comeback after the 2023 superuser scandal, the company reached an all-time high in cash game traffic in January 2024. Part of it is thanks to its transparent handling of the scandal, but it’s also due to its winter promotions and tournaments.
It held multiple record-breaking and impressive tournaments throughout the year, such as the following:
- $100m Bounty Hunter Series
- $10m Overlay Edition of GGMasters
- $100m WSOP Super Circuit Series
- $250m GGPoker World Festival
- Online WSOP Qualifiers
- $115m WSOP Online Bracelet Series
- $24m End-of-Year Giveaway
- $100m Winter Giveaway Series
Besides these events, it also hosted the record-breaking WSOP Online Main Event (almost reaching $30m in guarantees) and the $50m WSOP Paradise Super Main Event. In October 2024, it broke another record for crash game traffic with a figure of 13,000 concurrent seats.
Challenges Can’t Stop Its Progression
While it experienced some challenges in 2024, such as its policy changes, the additional fee on top of the MTT rake, and the privatisation of the VIP cash games, it still held strong. After Jason Koon unexpectedly left the position, it entered into a partnership with Fedor Holz as an ambassador for game integrity.
Still, the company expanded by acquiring the WSOP brand for $500m in its 10th year of operating. With less than a decade behind the GGPoker brand specifically, it’ll require a change of epic proportions to knock this room out of the lead.
What to Expect from 2025
The new year brought a plateau in cash game figures, with the number mimicking the room’s position last year instead of rising. Still, this is a natural consequence of operating at the top for years now.
Despite new competitors (like Coin Poker and WPT Global) and old ones (like PokerStars) trying to overtake GGPoker, the brand is still far ahead of them. The closest room is WPT Global, and it’s behind with over 10,000 seats.
This year, we look forward to seeing the second season of Game of Gold from GGPoker and the WSOP event in Las Vegas under GGPoker’s new leadership. We also believe the poker room will expand into markets like Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Greece, and Bulgaria.
GGPoker’s Indomitable Will in 2025
While GGPoker has faced its share of challenges, its will to provide the best for its players and to outperform its achievements guarantees a long reign at the top. As things stand now, we can’t imagine that something would be able to knock the poker room from its throne.
