Alberta’s regulated online poker market has officially opened, with 888 taking an early lead over its competitors. On October 13, the operator launched a dedicated poker platform for players in the province, extending its regulated Canadian presence beyond Ontario.

The move was far from certain. Until recently, industry expectations suggested that Alberta could face a period without regulated online poker, as major international operators prepared to withdraw from the province under its new licensing framework.

Instead, 888 has chosen to establish a local poker network immediately, even though the province’s relatively small population presents significant challenges for maintaining sufficient player traffic.

A Second Canadian First for 888poker

The Alberta launch represents another regulatory milestone for 888. In April 2022, the company became the first private operator to introduce regulated online poker in Ontario, entering the market ahead of competitors including BetMGM, PokerStars and GGPoker.

More than four years later, the operator has repeated that achievement in Alberta.

However, the two provincial markets will operate independently. Alberta players cannot compete against customers in Ontario or participate in 888’s international player pool.

Instead, the company has introduced a separate poker environment exclusively for Alberta residents, in accordance with the province’s regulatory requirements.

Existing customers have been instructed to download new software and register new accounts to access the regulated platform.

This separation is particularly important in online poker, where the availability of opponents directly influences game selection, tournament prize pools and the overall playing experience.

Cash Games and Guaranteed Tournaments Available at Launch

Despite the limitations of a province-only player pool, 888 has introduced a selection of cash games and tournaments from its opening day.

The platform offers Texas Hold’em and Omaha cash games, alongside several tournament formats familiar to regular online poker players.

The initial tournament schedule includes Turbo events, Mystery Bounty competitions and Knockout tournaments, with relatively small guaranteed prize pools reflecting the size of the new market.

The first Sunday schedule also features two notable events:

  • Sunday Micro PKO: C$1 buy-in with C$250 guaranteed.
  • Mystery Bounty Main Event: C$22 buy-in with C$4,000 guaranteed.

The Mystery Bounty tournament will provide an early indication of local player interest. With a C$22 entry fee, approximately 200 entries would be needed to generate enough buy-ins to cover the C$4,000 guarantee, before accounting for tournament fees.

The platform has launched using 888’s recently introduced green visual identity, although no major opening tournament festival or dedicated launch promotion had been announced at the time of publication.

Can Alberta Support Its Own Online Poker Market?

The biggest question surrounding the launch is whether Alberta can sustain an independent online poker ecosystem.

With approximately five million residents, the province represents a considerably smaller market than Ontario, which has a population approaching 16 million.

That difference matters significantly for poker operators.

Unlike online casino games, poker depends on players competing against one another. A successful platform requires sufficient traffic across multiple stakes, formats and playing times.

A limited player population can create difficulties filling tournament fields, maintaining active cash game tables and offering attractive guaranteed prize pools.

888 already faces substantial competition and liquidity challenges in Ontario, despite operating in a province with a much larger potential customer base.

Launching a separate network in Alberta therefore represents a calculated commercial risk.

Nevertheless, entering the market first provides certain advantages. Without immediate competition from other licensed poker platforms, 888 has an opportunity to attract local players and establish itself before larger rivals arrive.

Shared Liquidity Could Transform the Market

One possible explanation for 888’s decision is the prospect of future player pool integration between Canadian provinces.

Shared liquidity would allow players in Alberta and Ontario to compete at the same tables and enter the same tournaments, potentially improving traffic and supporting larger prize pools.

Such an arrangement could fundamentally change the economics of regulated online poker in Alberta.

Previously, 888 representatives had indicated that participation in the province would depend partly on the final regulatory approach to poker liquidity.

The decision to launch a standalone platform does not necessarily mean that those concerns have disappeared.

Instead, it may suggest that the company sees sufficient long-term potential to justify entering the market before any broader liquidity-sharing arrangements become available.

However, there has been no confirmed announcement establishing when, or whether, Alberta and Ontario will permit their regulated poker networks to merge.

For now, 888 must build its Alberta player base independently.

PokerStars Exits as Competitors Consider Their Options

While 888 has entered Alberta’s regulated market, other major poker brands face more complicated decisions.

PokerStars informed Alberta customers that its existing services would be discontinued as the province transitioned to its new regulatory framework.

Unlike 888, PokerStars has not announced an immediate return with a locally regulated poker platform.

Its sister brand FanDuel already operates in Alberta, creating a potential route for a future poker offering. However, there is currently no confirmed timetable for such a launch.

GGPoker’s position also remains uncertain. The operator has participated in Alberta’s regulatory process, but its plans for a dedicated provincial poker network have not been publicly clarified.

BetMGM represents another possible entrant.

The company already operates regulated online poker in Ontario and entered Alberta’s market with casino gaming and sports betting when the new framework opened in July.

Its existing poker infrastructure and Canadian market experience could make it a serious competitor if it decides to introduce poker in Alberta.

For the moment, however, 888 holds a significant first-mover advantage.

A Small Launch With Potentially Major Implications

The arrival of regulated online poker in Alberta is an important development for Canada’s gambling industry, even if the initial tournament guarantees are modest.

It demonstrates that at least one established international operator is prepared to invest in a relatively small, geographically restricted poker market.

Whether that decision proves commercially successful will depend on player adoption, the eventual arrival of competitors and, perhaps most importantly, the future of interprovincial poker liquidity.

If Alberta ultimately permits its players to compete with those in Ontario, 888 could find itself particularly well positioned, having already established regulated operations in both provinces.

Until then, its Alberta platform will serve as a real-world test of whether a small Canadian province can sustain an independent regulated online poker network.

For 888, the immediate achievement is clear: it has once again beaten its competitors to the starting line in a newly regulated Canadian poker market. The more difficult challenge will be turning that early advantage into a sustainable business.
