Ángel Guillén Doubles Up at WPT Australia – Los Jefes Dominate on the Road to Vegas

WPT Global Ambassador Ángel Guillén had a week to remember in Sydney, making history with a rare back-to-back triumph.

Within just 72 hours, the Mexican pro won both the AU$5K Mad Max and the AU$20K Super High Roller, collecting AU$321,000 in total winnings and earning a $16,000 seat to the upcoming WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas this December.

The WPT Global team caught up with Guillén right after his stunning performance to discuss Los Jefes’ team dominance, his personal victories, and how he balances poker, mindset, and family life.

WPT Australia introduced a new and exciting Team Tournament format, featuring 12 teams of five players each, with a AU$2,000 buy-in per player and a AU$24,000 prize pool.

At the end of the festival, the Mexican squad Los Jefes, led by Ángel Guillén, stood far above the rest.

“We pretty much destroyed the competition,” Guillén laughed. “The points difference between us and the others was huge. We had five wins — total domination.”

Across 32 events, Los Jefes racked up 3,605 points, easily securing the ‘Team of the Festival’ title and the AU$12,000 top team prize.

“The new WPT Australia team structure was innovative and fun,” Ángel added. “It allowed us to compete at a different level. We dominated the field, and personally winning two high rollers made it a dream come true.”

Guillén’s impressive run showcased both composure and adaptability.

He first took down the AU$5K Mad Max after trusting his instincts through several unconventional spots, and then — running on just three hours of sleep — returned to win the AU$20K Super High Roller, defeating teammate Sergio Barrios heads-up.

“The second win was surreal,” he said. “I wasn’t at my physical best, but the support from my team kept me focused. Facing Sergio in the final was one of the most magical moments of the entire festival.”

As a WPT Global Ambassador and one of Latin America’s most respected professionals, Guillén has seen the evolution of poker firsthand. For him, long-term success begins with inner work.

“The game has evolved with solvers and GTO strategies, but before the technical side, players must develop their mindset. Emotional control and presence are everything.”

He also highlighted how combining theoretical precision with human intuition gives him a unique edge.

“GTO keeps you consistent, but the real art lies in reading people, understanding emotions, and trusting timing. That’s what separates good players from great ones.”

Outside poker, Ángel and his wife — WPT host Lynn Gilmartin — focus on finding balance between the game and raising their four-year-old son.

“It’s definitely a challenge, but poker teaches patience and reflection. Family always comes first.”

Currently ranked second on Mexico’s all-time money list with over $2.7 million in live earnings, Guillén joked about chasing longtime friend JC Alvarado for the top spot.

“If I ever pass JC, he said he’d come out of retirement — so I guess that’s my new motivation!”
