GGPoker Signals Intent to Apply for Irish Online Gaming License

GGPoker has confirmed that it intends to apply for a license to operate in Ireland, becoming the first online poker operator to publicly express interest in joining the country’s newly regulated online gambling market. The announcement comes as Ireland begins implementing a comprehensive licensing system under its recently enacted Gambling Regulation Act.

Ireland is currently transitioning to a fully regulated online gambling environment overseen by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI). The regulator has officially opened applications for both retail and remote betting licenses, marking a significant step toward replacing the existing system, where many operators serve Irish players under offshore licenses.

Under the new framework, all gambling operators offering services to Irish customers must obtain local authorization. Existing remote licenses will remain valid only until July 1, 2026, after which companies must comply with the new licensing regime or cease operations in the market.

The licensing rollout follows a directive from Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, authorizing the regulator to begin processing applications. Among the most notable limitations are a maximum wager of €10 and a cap of €3,000 on winnings per bet. These thresholds may restrict higher-stakes gameplay and reduce the attractiveness of certain formats, particularly those popular among experienced poker players.

Multi-table tournaments, jackpot sit-and-go formats, and higher-stakes no-limit cash games could be especially impacted if the wager and payout limits are applied strictly. However, poker is not explicitly defined in the legislation, leaving room for interpretation by the regulator.

Ireland’s Gambling Regulation Act also introduces transparency requirements for license applicants. Companies intending to apply must publish a public notice of their intention at least 28 days before submitting a formal application.
