NBC National Heads-Up Championship - Negreanu Withdraws, Sands Joins

Dealing starts at the NBC National Heads-Up Championship soon, without Daniel Negreanu apparently, who backed out and will not take part in the most prestigious heads-up challenge.

As we reported, the NBC National Heads-Up Championship is organized for the 8th time this year, between 24-26 January. The invited pros will battle each other at the Ceasars Palace tables.

We already published the list of the names participating, but the pairings have also been available since late yesterday.

NBC heads-up pairings

Even though Daniel Negreanu was invited to the event, he seems to be absent from the above pairing. The reason behind this is he backed out and decided not to participate this year. To take his place, the organizers invited David 'Doc' Sands, who raised concern a few days ago about him not being invited. Sands is now paired with the WSOP 2012 8th Robert Saluburu.

"I can confirm that I did take the spot of @RealKidPoker. Not sure why he withdrew but I can assure you it was not to give me his seat." - Sands writes on his twitter. The reasons behind Negreanu's decision were clarified by himself in the video below; basically he promised his friends to be there to help them, and wouldn't want to let them down because of a poker tournament.

The field seems to be extremely strong, there are some amazing matches in store for us even in the first round, such as Viktor "Isildur1" Blom vs. Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger, Phil Ivey vs. Phil Laak, Isaac Haxton vs. Justin Bonomo, Joseph Cheong vs. Olivier Busquet, Jason Mercier vs. Dan Smith and the Erik Seidel vs. Tom "durrrr" Dwan heads-ups, but of course we could highlight any of the 32 games.

The 8-time WSOP champion Erik Seidel jokingly reported the result of his draw on his twitter:

"My 1st round match up in the NBC HU is the great asian player Tom Dwan" - referring to Tom Dwan's childhood spent in Macau and recent move to Macau.

The NBC National Heads-Up Championship is an invitational event, but players need to pay the $25,000 buy-in to participate. The tournament will be recorded by NBC, the first episode will air on 14 March, with new episodes coming every week until 20 April.

Dealing starts soon at the Caesars Palace. Who do you root for? Who do you think will win the tournament?
