WSOP 2013 Event #17 $1,500 No Limit Hold’em started with a field of 2,105 and a prize pool of $2,841,750, shared among 216 finishers. The event reached its final day with 15 players, led by David ‘Bakes’ Baker (1,384,000) and featuring the likes of 2009 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Cada, as well as three times WSOP and two times WPT winner Barry Greenstein.

The nine-handed final table was formulated with the elimination of Paul Francoi Tedeschi: the young Frenchman, who finished 6th in last year’s WSOPE Main Event, 3-bet to 135,000 from the BB on Manuel Mutke’s open to 50,000 from the SB (Level 23: 3,000/10,000/20,000). Mutke 4-bet to 240,000 and Tedeschi went all-in with 800,000. Mutke showed pocket tens and Tedeschi’s Q-3s did not hold, despite a flopped flush draw.

The Final Table seat draw was as follows:

Seat 1: Joe Ward – 853,000
Seat 2: Thomas Nicotera – 449,000
Seat 3: Michael Kurth – 578,000
Seat 4: Samuel Taylor – 1,081,000
Seat 5: Athanasios Polychronopoulos – 1,971,000
Seat 6: Everett Carlton – 513,000
Seat 7: David Baker – 836,000
Seat 8: Joe Cada – 1,492,000
Seat 9: Manuel Mutke – 1,705,000

First out was Thomas Nicotera, followed by ‘Bakes’ on Level 25 (5,000/15,000/30,000). The two times WSOP champion shoved with 490,000 on chipleader Athanasios Polychronopoulos’ open to 70,000 and Everett Carlton’s call. Polychronopoulos folded but Carlton insta-called with pocket aces. Baker showed A-4 and not even the four on the board helped him.

Joe Ward finished 7th, Michael Kurth 6th and Samuel Taylor 5th. Level 29 (10,000/40,000/80,000) brought about Cada’s elimination: Polychronopoulos opened to 190,000 from UTG, Cada ran all-in with 1,175,000 and Polychronopoulos called.

With a jack for Polychronopoulos, Cada finished the tournament in 4th.

The heads-up was set on Level 30 (10,000/50,000/100,000): Polychronopoulos raised from the SB, Carlton shoved with 2,450,000 and Polychronopoulos snap-called. Carlton held A-6 against Polychronopoulos’ A-J and the board came neutral.

Manuel Mutke – 4,290,000

Despite the relatively even stacks, the duel was over in just three hands. In the last one Polychronopoulos raised to 250,000, Mutke 3-bet to 650,000, Polychronopoulos 4-bet all-in and Mutke called.

The queen on the river gave two pairs to Polychronopoulos, together with the victory.
