WSOP 2013 - Event #54 - Dana Castaneda is $1,000 NLHE Champion

Less than 0.5% of the original entrants remained in play by Day 3 of World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2013 Event #54 $1,000 No Limit Hold’em. Barry Hutter had the lead with about double the amount of chips before runner-up Joseph Wertz.

WSOP 2013 Event #54 $1,000 No Limit Hold’em had 2,883 entrants, the buy-ins contributing to the $2,594,700 prize pool. Only 239 of them remained, which meant the bubble bursting already on Day 1, the 297th finisher taking home $1,894. The chipleader at the end of the day was Edward Nassif and the field included Jesse Sylvia, Matt Salsberg, Erik Seidel and WSOP champion Péter Traply, among others.

On Day 3, only 14 of those could return and the lead belonged by far to Barry Hutter, who had 2,054,000 in chips in front of him, while second biggest stack Joseph Wertz sat behind 1,069,000 and the average was 617,786. Play started on Level 22 (2,000/8,000/16,000) and they played it down to the final nine in about two hours.

The Final Table seat draw was as follows:

Seat 1: Michael Zucchet – 868,000
Seat 2: Joseph Wertz – 426,000
Seat 4: Matthias Bednarek – 567,000
Seat 5: Kenneth Gregersen – 938,000
Seat 6: Philippe Clerc – 1,349,000
Seat 7: Dana Castaneda – 221,000
Seat 8: Barry Hutter – 2,408,000
Seat 9: Jacob Bazeley – 673,000
Seat 10: Jason Bigelow – 1,209,000

Play started on Level 24 (4,000/12,000/24,000) and with a double double-up from shortstack Dana Castaneda: first, her A-J was enough against Hutter’s 5-6s, and then her sevens improved to a set against Michael Zucchet’s A-K.

The first out was Kenneth Gregersen, who called all-in with 835,000 in chips preflop on Hutter’s re-raise shove. Gregersen had {#}J {#}J , putting him ahead of Hutter’s {#}K {#}Q and the flop came {#}A {#}A {#}4. Even the {#}4 on the turn strengthened his position but a cooler {#}K on the river ended the tournament for him.

Wertz, Jacob Bazeley, Hutter, Philippe Clerc and Zucchet followed, before the heads-up was set by the elimination of Matthias Bednarek. With the latter two players losing their stacks to Castaneda, she had a major edge over Jason Bigelow at the start of the heads-up:

Dana Castaneda – 7,200,000
Jason Bigelow – 1,450,000

On Level 27 (5,000/25,000/50,000), the day was already over: Bigelow limped from the SB, Castaneda checked and the flop came {#}7 {#}5 {#}7. Castaneda bet 125,000, Bigelow moved all-in and Castaneda called.

Bigelow: {#}Q {#}2
Castaneda: {#}9 {#}5

Turn: {#}T
River: {#}9

Castaneda won the tournament with two pairs.
