The World Series of the online poker world, the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) takes place this year for the twelfth time, running 8 to 29 September. The 66 events boast a total guaranteed prize pool of $40,000,000; since last year’s 65 events saw a total of $55,000,000 accumulate in prize money, it is safe to say host room PokerStars will not have to worry about any overlay.
In 13 events, the guaranteed prize pool is seven figures, including the $5,200 Main Event, the prize money of which being raised from $5 million to $8 million guaranteed. The winner can take home at least $1.25 million, which may be altered if a deal is made, see last year’s winner ‘maratik’, who became a meme for his way of negotiating (“Give me translator”; “I WONT MILLION”).
A couple of new game types are also being introduced to the series, including the Progressive Knockout events, where the bounty is changing dynamically according to how many players have been knocked out by the player you eliminate. Another newcomer is the Courchlevel, which is essentially 5-Card Omaha but with the first card of the flop being turned up before the preflop betting round.
As far as buy-ins are concerned, $215 events are once again dominating the schedule, accompanied by a pair of $109 events and even $10,300 high rollers for the wealthiest. These high roller games are offered in Heads-Up, 8-Max Second Chance and 8-Game varieties.
It goes without saying that players can qualify for the events from just a couple of cents or VPPs through the satellites already running in the room.
