The return of the World Series of Poker Main Event to ESPN delivered more than just nostalgia. While poker legends such as Jamie Gold, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth featured prominently, it was little-known Jourdan Baptiste who became the surprise star of the opening broadcast.
Baptiste entered the 2026 Main Event with almost no tournament résumé, yet quickly won over viewers with constant table talk and fearless play. His lively personality reminded many fans of Jamie Gold's famous 2006 championship run, creating one of the most entertaining storylines of the first televised episodes.
The two even shared a feature table. Gold showcased his trademark speech play, while Baptiste successfully talked an opponent into calling off an entire stack. Ironically, their duel ended with Gold's pocket aces eliminating Baptiste's ace-queen after a queen appeared on the flop.
The nostalgic production received widespread praise, with Daniel Negreanu calling the first episodes "exceptionally good." ESPN also reunited legendary commentators Lon McEachern and Norman Chad, while mixing in Ali Nejad and Nick Schulman. Alongside poker boom icons such as Chris Moneymaker, Jennifer Tilly and Erick Lindgren, the broadcast also highlighted modern personalities including Martin Kabrhel and Jimmy D'Ambrosio.
Baptiste's breakout run, however, ended on Day 2. After flopping the nut straight against James Burns' set of kings, all the chips went into the middle, but the board paired on the turn, eliminating the fan favorite just short of the money despite his impressive Day 1 performance.
The next two Main Event episodes will air on July 28, while ESPN will also broadcast the final table live from August 3-5.
