PokerStars Spain has completed a major technical migration that changed how players sign in and took the site offline for more than a day. The move brings the Spanish operation closer to the setup Flutter uses in Italy, where players from three separately branded poker rooms share the same tables. Spain already shares a PokerStars player pool with France and Portugal, so a future brand launch on the network could add players to an established cross-border pool.
Italy shows how Flutter could add brands in Southern Europe
In Italy, Flutter moved PokerStars to a different account management setup before bringing Sisal and SNAI onto the same poker network. Both brands retained their identities while sharing PokerStars’ platform and player pool. Flutter has also brought poker operations together in North America. On its separate international dot-com network, Betfair and Paddy Power have recently joined under their own brands.
The Spanish rollout has two similarities to the Italian one. PokerStars Spain switched to a new player account management system, replacing the previous Stars Account login setup. The redesigned PokerStars.es site also closely resembles the Italian site, with poker formats featured on the homepage and dedicated sections for tournament series, live events and learning resources. The poker software itself appears largely unchanged beyond the new login. Players reported more noticeable changes to the sportsbook, while the extent of any casino changes remains unclear. Both products are still accessible through the PokerStars client.
A planned overnight update took more than a day
Maintenance began at 8:30 p.m. CET on November 3, with service expected to resume at 9:15 a.m. the next morning. Access and new account registration were suspended during the work. The outage lasted more than 24 hours, and some players were still reporting login issues more than 36 hours after the scheduled reopening. PokerStars Spain acknowledged that it was still resolving problems after the migration. By November 6, service had returned to normal.
PokerStars said the update would help it meet new regulatory requirements and improve the player experience. On October 28, Spain introduced a rule under Royal Decree 813/2026 requiring licensed online gambling operators to verify that the player and the holder of the payment method used for deposits and withdrawals are the same person. The rule applies to new registrations from October 28. Existing players have six months, through April 2027, to complete verification. During that period, unverified players can keep playing and depositing with their existing payment methods, but cannot withdraw winnings. The timing suggests the rule may have been one factor in the upgrade. PokerStars has yet to detail how the migration relates to the decree.
Betfair is a possible candidate for a Spanish return
Betfair previously offered online poker in Spain through iPoker.EU before discontinuing the product. Poker Industry PRO identifies it as a possible candidate for the PokerStars Southern Europe network, given that Betfair has already returned to international online poker through PokerStars under its own name. As of November 6, Flutter has announced neither a Spanish Betfair Poker relaunch nor plans to add any other brand to the shared pool.
