Angle Shooting Controversy at WSOP 2025: GGPoker Pro Andy Tsai Accused by Amateur Player

A heated debate has erupted during the WSOP 2025 $1,500 Millionaire Maker, as amateur player Brent Philbin publicly accused GGPoker pro Andy Tsai of angle shooting — a controversial tactic that tests the boundaries of ethical play.

The situation unfolded during Day 1C of the tournament. Philbin opened with 7♦7♥, and Tsai defended the big blind with Q♥Q♠. On a flop of 6♥5♥5♠, Philbin bet 4,000. Tsai responded with a raise to 7,500 — an amount that was ruled illegal under tournament rules because it didn't meet the minimum raise size. The dealer required Tsai to raise to at least 8,000.

After adjusting to 8,000, Philbin 3-bet to 29,000. Tsai tanked for an extended period before eventually moving all-in. Philbin called — and lost the hand to Tsai’s overpair. While Tsai advanced with 196,000 chips, Philbin was eliminated shortly after.

Philbin took to Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) to voice his frustration, calling Tsai’s behavior unsporting and deceptive. He claimed that Tsai intentionally raised incorrectly and stalled to throw him off. Philbin also accused Tsai of lying about his tournament experience.

In response, Andy Tsai (aka @andystackspoker) posted his own explanation and a video clip of the hand. He claimed the situation was a misunderstanding caused by his inexperience with live tournaments and denied any intention to angle shoot. Tsai noted that it was his first hand at a new table, and he chose to flat call with QQ preflop to trap.

The poker community is now debating whether this was a deliberate angle shot or a misunderstanding blown out of proportion by Philbin’s frustration after busting. With multiple angle shooting allegations surfacing at this year’s WSOP, the line between gamesmanship and poor etiquette remains under scrutiny.
